BLOGUsing Video in a Leadership Retreat

Is there a role for video in leadership retreats? Or are retreats so confidential that the presence of a camera will detract from the real conversations that need to take place?

Using Video in a Leadership Retreat

As a rule, I would not want the camera running throughout the retreat. But as the meeting facilitator, I recognize that video can be a powerful tool, especially when used strategically. And especially when one considers how the video can be used well beyond the retreat itself.

Here are five ways where video can make a difference:

  • Video the CEO or Founder’s opening remarks so that employees who weren’t there can get the benefit of improved alignment.
  • Video key participants for a company intranet or internal podcast episode.
  • Video participants answering selected questions to create a library of social media assets.
  • Sometimes we’ll have teams present their small group work to all of the retreat participants: these presentations can be recorded, and then produced into a summary that is broadcast internally more widely. Or the recording can be used as reference material by the team responsible for implementation.
  • Sometimes we’ll do presentation skills training: video can be used to capture the training and the individual presentations. The video can then be use during private one-on-one presentation skills coaching meetings.

This week’s action plan:

Retreats have the unique benefit of bringing together key leaders for an extended amount of time, and doing so in person. After the retreat, aligning the rest of the organization with the decisions, priorities, and new vocabulary from the retreat is critical. And video can play a powerful role in doing so. This week, send this article to the person responsible for organizing your last retreat, for consideration on your next one.

Video Insight: How and where video gets embedded into your retreat is highly dependent on the facilitator, and how they build out the agenda. (How not to do it: getting a retreat participant to do it. How we do it: we deliver our retreats as a tag-team, and use the second facilitator to take targeted and strategic video.)

AI Insight: A transcript of the retreat (or parts of the retreat) can be used to train the company’s AI.
